The word codec stands for Compressor / Decompressor. A codec is a piece of software that can compress and decompress audio or video information. Compression is needed because audio and video information is usually too large to be manageable without compression.
Programs like PMIO that use the standard Video for Windows (VFW) functions will be able to use the VFW codecs that are installed on your computer. Examples of common video codecs are Cinepak, MPEG4, DivX, etc.
